Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who can apply for and achieve the Seal of Biliteracy?

Seniors taking a World Language at LHS or ANY senior at LHS who is proficient in another language. For example, students may acquire another language by living abroad, speaking another language at home, or learning at another program or school. ALL students acquiring any language in addition to English are potential awardees.

Do I need to take the AP or IB exam to achieve this honor? Or is there a different test to show my Proficiency Level?

Students CAN use their AP or IB test score to achieve the Seal, and/or take the AAPPL test instead at LHS and use that score. The AAPPL test is the only way for students not enrolled in a level 5 AP/IB Language course to achieve the Seal. Students in level 5 AP/IB Language courses could do BOTH tests - the AP or IB exam and the AAPPL test if they’d like to.

    What is the AAPPL exam?

The ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is an assessment of standards-based language learning across the three modes of communication (Interpersonal, Presentational, and Interpretive) as defined by the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning.

The AAPPL assesses Interpersonal Listening/Speaking, Presentational Writing, Interpretive Reading, and Interpretive Listening, and ratings are assigned according to the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners.

The 4 components of the test take a total of approximately 2 hours. Each component can be administered separately. The AAPPL can be ordered as a combined 4-component test or in other bundled options.

You can take this test (all domains at the same time or separately) as many times as you need in order to score Intermediate 3 in all of the domains. Once you achieve Intermediate 3 in a domain, you do NOT need to retake it. Therefore, we encourage all JUNIORS to take the AAPPL test and take it again at least once their senior year.  For more information, watch this video.

What if my Language Other than English (LOTE) is not offered on the AAPPL exam or AP or IB exam?

If your Language Other Than English is NOT offered on the AAPPL test, you will need to demonstrate Proficiency by either taking a different approved Proficiency test or by submitting a Portfolio. Contact djamieson@lindberghschools.ws for more info or click here.
