The History of Lindbergh Schools

Early History (1839-1939)
1839 - One room log cabin Fenton School is earliest record of public school in the area
1843 - First Concord School opens in log cabin
1851 - Sappington School opens in log cabin
1864 - Rott School opens in log cabin
1891 - Glendale School is built at Watson and Grant roads
1939 - Grant School is built by Works Progress Administration to replace Glendale School

David Punch, Superintendent (1949-1955)
1949 -Representatives from Concord, Fenton, Grant, Rott, Sappington schools meet to discuss consolidation
Nov. 28, 1949 - First Board of Education election; John Dressel elected first board president
Sept. 1950 - Sappington School basement becomes first home of high school
Feb. 1, 1951 - New high school groundbreaking
Sept. 1951 - Classes start at high school, which was named Grandview High School
April 1952 - Name changes to Lindbergh High School
Sept. 14, 1952 - Lindbergh High School Dedication
May 23, 1954 - First high school class graduates
Sept. 1954 - Watson Elementary School opens

Noah Gray, Superintendent (1955-1980)
1955 - Noah Gray named Superintendent of Schools
Aug. 13, 1957 - Resolution adopted to name district Lindbergh School District
Sept. 1957 - Dressel Elementary School opens
Sept. 1959 - Crestwood Elementary School opens
Sept. 1960 - Long Elementary School opens
Sept. 1961 - Kennerly Elementary School opens
Sept. 1963 - Lindbergh North Junior High opens (now Truman)
Sept. 1966 - Middle school concept is adopted. Junior High becomes “The Middle School”
Oct. 5, 1970 - Sperreng Middle School opens
Summer 1972 - Grant School closes
Oct. 1974 - Lindbergh celebrates 25th Anniversary
Summer 1976 - Rott Elementary School closes
June 1980 - Noah Gray retires after serving 25 years as Superintendent

Dr. Gary Wright, Superintendent (1980-1990)
July 1980 - Gary K. Wright named Superintendent of Schools
Oct. 1980 - Senior Associates Program begins with 174 senior citizens
July 1, 1981 - The Middle School is renamed Harry S Truman Middle School
Summer 1982 - Concord, Dressel, Fenton and Watson elementary schools close. Students consolidate into remaining four district elementary schools
June 23, 1982 - Lindbergh joins the Voluntary Interdistrict Choice Corporation Program
Summer 1983 - Truman Middle School closes due to declining enrollment
Sept. 1984 - LHS offers International Baccalaureate program
1984 - Community passes $4.5 million bond issue to build new auditorium at Lindbergh High School
May 1985 - Lindbergh Leaders program begins
Sept. 1986 - Kindergarten Center opens at Truman for Crestwood and Kennerly students
1988 - Lindbergh High School Alumni Association founded
Nov. 1990 - Renaissance Program begins at Lindbergh High School, encouraging students to achieve academic ideals
March 1991 - Concord School re-opens as home of Affton-Lindbergh Early Childhood Education

Dr. James A. Sandfort, Superintendent (1991-2008)
Sept. 1991 - Truman Elementary School opens
Sept. 1991 - The St. Louis Regional Program for Exceptionally Gifted Students (PEGS) opened its doors in the district with one teacher and seven elementary students.
May 1992 - First communitywide SPIRIT Festival
Oct. 1993 - Lindbergh High School Sports Hall of Fame is unveiled
April 1995 - Community passes $25 million Proposition R bond issue, supporting additions and improvements districtwide
Fall 1996 New lighted outdoor athletic facility opens, allowing for night games at LHS.Sept. 12, 1996 - LHS varsity soccer team plays first night game in new, lighted stadium.
Sept. 20, 1996 - LHS varsity football team plays first night game in new, lighted stadium.
1998 - Lindbergh Schools Foundation is established
Sept. 1998 - First full-day kindergarten classes are offered
Fall 1998 - Kennerly and Truman elementary schools are named Missouri Gold Star Schools
Fall 1999 - Truman Elementary School is honored by U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence
1999 - Lindbergh School District celebrates 50th anniversary
Spring 2000 - Kennerly Elementary School is named National School of Character
April 2000 - Community passes Prop R $9.5 million bond issue, supporting renovations across the district
2002 - Sperreng Middle School is honored by U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence
Sept. 2003 - Sperreng English teacher Tara Sparks is named Missouri State Teacher of the Year
April 2003 - Community passes Proposition 4: A $14.1 million bond issue supporting new pool at Lindbergh High School and other improvements
Jan. 1, 2005 - Lindbergh High School Spirit of St. Louis Marching Band performs at Tournament of Roses Parade
Aug. 5, 2005 - New pool opens at LHS
Nov. 2006 - Community passes $32 million Prop R bond issue, supporting new classroom additions at Kennerly and Sappington elementary schools
2006 - District begins multi-year phase out of Voluntary Interdistrict Choice Corporation (VICC) program, due to increasing enrollment. Last VICC student graduated in 2016.
2007 - Sappington Elementary School is named a Missouri School of Character
2007 - Lindbergh Schools becomes first school district to be named a Missouri District of Character
June 30, 2008 - Dr. James A. Sandfort retires after serving as superintendent for 17 years

July 1, 2008 - Dr. Jim Simpson named Superintendent of Schools
Fall 2008 - Sappington Elementary School is named National School of Character
Fall 2008 - Lindbergh School District is named a National School District of Character
Nov. 2008 - Community passes Prop R 2008, a $31 million no-tax-rate-increase bond issue supporting the construction of Concord Elementary School and a new Lindbergh Early Childhood Education building; in addition to revocations at Truma and Sperreng middle schools.
Jan. 2009 - Long Elementary School is named a Missouri School of Character
March 2009 - Truman Elementary School is named a Missouri Gold Star School
March 2009 - Crestwood Elementary School is named a Missouri Gold Star School
Oct. 2009 - District officially changes name to “Lindbergh Schools”
Oct. 2009 - Long Elementary School is named a National School of Character
March 2010 - District cuts more than $4.7 million from the budget, including positions and programs, due to $14 million cumulative decline in revenue
Aug. 2010 - Lindbergh High School is named a Missouri School of Character
Nov. 2010 - Community passes Prop L, a 65 cent tax increase to retain staff, eliminate deficit spending and protect bus service for students
Jan. 2011 - LHS Spirit of St. Louis Marching Band performs in Tournament of Roses Parade
Jan. 2011 - Crestwood Elementary School is named Missouri School of Character.
Jan. 2011 - New Lindbergh Early Childhood Education building opens on high school campus
April 2011 - Crestwood Elementary School is named a Missouri Gold Star School
May 2011 - Lindbergh High School is named a National School of Character
May 2011 - Crestwood Elementary School is named a National School of Character
Fall 2011 - Truman Elementary School becomes Truman Middle School
Aug. 2011 - District purchases Dressel School in response to increasing enrollment districtwide
Aug. 2011 - Lindbergh Teacher of the Year Eric Cochran is named a semifinalist in Missouri’s Teacher of the Year program
Aug. 4, 2011 - District celebrates grand opening of new Concord Elementary School
Sept. 2011 - Crestwood Elementary is honored by U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence
Oct. 27, 2011 - District celebrates completion of new classroom additions at Long and Crestwood elementary schools
Apr. 2012 - Lindbergh High School is named a Missouri Gold Star School
Sept. 2012 - Lindbergh High School is honored by U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence
Apr. 2013 - Sappington Elementary School is named a Missouri Gold Star School
Sept. 2013 - Sappington Elementary School is honored by U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence
Mar. 2014 - Sperreng Middle School is named a Missouri School of Character
Mar. 2014 - Lindbergh Schools is named a Missouri District of Character
Apr. 2014 - Community passes $34 million Prop G bond issue, to build a sixth elementary school on Dressel School property; and to expand cafeteria, update gymnasium, add science rooms and modernize library at Lindbergh High School
Apr. 2014 - Concord and Long Elementary schools are named Missouri Gold Star Schools
Apr. 2014 - Sperreng is named a Missouri School of Character
Apr. 2014 - Lindbergh Schools is named a National District of Character
Sept. 2015 - District breaks ground on new Dressel Elementary School
2016 - District purchases Johnny’s Market site for new Central Office building
2017 - New Central Office building opens
Fall 2017 - District celebrates grand opening of Dressel Elementary School
2018 - Dr. Jim Simpson retires after 10 years as superintendent of Lindbergh Schools

Dr. Tony Lake, Superintendent (2018-Present)
2018 - Dr. Tony Lake named Superintendent of Schools
2018 - Crestwood, Sappington elementary schools are named Top 5 Percent Title I Schools
Apr. 2019 - Community passes Prop R, a $105 million no-tax-rate-increase bond issue to renovate and rebuild Lindbergh High School, and improve safety districtwide
Sept. 2019 - District uses Prop R funds to purchase property at 9400 Watson Rd. for Support Service Center.
Sept. 28, 2020 - District breaks ground on new Lindbergh High School
2020 - Crestwood Elementary School PE teacher Darrion Cockrell is named 2021 Missouri Teacher of the Year
2021 - The LHS varsity and JV Flyerettes teams win first place in the kick division at the National Dance Team Championships
April 2021- District purchases the Concord Farmers Club site
2022 - Truman Middle School English Language Arts Teacher Kristina Kohl is named 2022 Missouri Teacher of the Year finalist
Feb. 24, 2024 - District celebrates grand opening of new Lindbergh High School
Apr. 2024 - Community passes Prop R, a $150 million no-tax-rate-increase bond issue to support building equity across elementary schools, middle school renovations, safety upgrades districtwide and a PK-12 agricultural STEM learning center on the Concord Farmers Club site.
May 2024 - LHS, Truman, and Sperreng are named Missouri Schools of Character
Aug. 19, 2024 - Lindbergh Schools Teacher of the Year Tim Waters is named a Missouri Teacher of the Year semifinalist
